This original oil painting is a classical study of the famous bust of Michelangelo’s David, painted in a monochromatic palette to emphasize light, form, and sculptural structure. The piece explores the dramatic lighting and powerful geometry of the Renaissance masterpiece, translating the marble sculpture into oil paint through careful observation and traditional atelier techniques.
This painting was developed slowly over nearly two years, beginning with a charcoal drawing study in early 2024 and finishing the oil painting near the end of 2025. Created while studying part-time at a classical atelier in Minneapolis, the work reflects the patience and discipline required in traditional classical realism training—carefully building values, studying form, and painting directly from life.
Working in grayscale allowed me to focus completely on the structure of the sculpture: the sharp planes of the face, the dramatic contrast of light and shadow, and the expressive intensity that makes Michelangelo’s David such an iconic work of art.
The painting captures the timeless presence of the sculpture while remaining unmistakably a painting—brushwork, surface texture, and subtle tonal transitions bring a sense of life and atmosphere to the piece.
This work is perfect for collectors who appreciate:

• Renaissance sculpture and art history
• Monochromatic or black and white oil paintings
